GABA Charitable Trust
GABA has a long history of giving back to the GLBT Community. On 9 November 1999, The GABA Charitable Trust was established to manage this in a clear and transparent manner and to separate GABA’s charitable work from its regular activities as a community organisation.
The principal objective of the Trust is to “maintain a fund available to individuals and institutions for the explicit purpose of health, welfare, and support services for the benefit of the gay community of New Zealand”.
In the past decade the Trust has donated in excess of $150,000 to fund a broad range of organisations. Past recipients have included larger organisations who provide a wide range of services to the community, as well as numerous lesser known, but equally vital, organisations and projects in the wider GLBT community.
Five years ago GABA and the Trust also created the GABA Tertiary Scholarship, which assists young people leaving secondary school through their first year of full-time tertiary study. In 2012, in recognition of the increased costs and challenges or Tertiary education, the GABA Charitable Trust is offering two larger scholarships of $3000 each for the first year of tertiary studies.
The success of the GABA GOLD Charity Auction in November 2011 raised over $24,000 in new funds now available for distribution to GLBT community organisations and individuals. The Trust’s aim is to donate money where it is most needed, and where it will have the greatest impact.
